Two things I would have Invested more Time on

If I could go back 20 years

--

What we would have done differently if we could go back in time?

People tend to ask these questions in their forties. If you are in your thirties and asking these questions, you are ahead of the game. You are blessed if you are in your twenties and reading this.

In the following, I am explaining — to myself — two things that I wish I would have spent more time on if I could go back 20 years.

Writing

By writing, I mean writing fluently. Writing on any topic at any time, freely.

We all struggle to write when someone asks us to write. We know that. We ask ourselves —

Why is writing so hard?

Writing isn’t as hard as it feels, only if…

As a beginner, you only need to ensure two things to write fluently and clearly. Anytime.

First, find your style of the act of writing. By that I mean are you comfortable writing on paper with a pen, or on a keyboard? I understand readers who are wondering why on earth someone would write on a paper these days.

You’d be correct in thinking that.

Writing on a paper is a thing of the past. Those from the dot com era of the nineties, and older folks know what I mean.

Second, force yourself to write frequently. Daily. Set a time of the day when you would sit down in front of our computer or at your station and use your preferred medium to start — writing.

Yes, start writing. Writing about anything you please.

If you do not know what to write, then you know something to write about. Yes, your topic is what you do not know to write on.

Keep writing.

Keep writing whatever comes to your mind like I am doing right now.

One thing that is better than ‘not writing’ — is ‘writing’ something.

Everyday.

Go keep writing.

Speaking

Like writing, speaking is another thing I would spend extra time on if I could go back in time.

By speaking, I mean speaking in front of people, or in front of camera these days. Speaking on a topic — in an organized way. Short, sweet and beautiful. Short speeches are more effective than long ones.

Speaking is hard. It is directly related to someone’s personality. Or personality defines it? Who knows that. May be its a chicken an egg problem.

Anyway, I digress.

Unlike writing, speaking is not easy to practice. Or is it? Sure you can practice speaking —

  • in your room
  • in front of a large tree
  • in front of a herd of cattle
  • in front of a river
  • in front of a park-bench

Anywhere as you please. Train yourself by speaking, and speaking more. Make it easy.

I know. It’s easier said than done. Nevertheless, keep speaking.
